How to spot immigration scams (and verify a real agency)
Fake WhatsApp numbers, upfront ‘guarantees’, no registration — here's how to check that an agency is legitimate before you pay anyone.
Immigration scams cost people their savings and their trust. The good news: a legitimate agency is easy to verify if you know what to look for.
Red flags to watch for
- Guaranteed approval. No honest agency can guarantee a visa — decisions belong to governments, not consultants.
- Pressure to pay fast. Urgency ("pay today or lose your slot") is a classic manipulation tactic.
- Only a phone number or WhatsApp. Real companies have a registered legal entity you can look up.
- Requests for unusual payment methods with no contract or invoice.
How to verify a real agency
- Ask for the registered legal entity name and registration number.
- Look it up yourself in the official government registry — a real agency will link you straight to it.
- Check that the office address and contact channels match the registered company.
- Read the contract before paying anything.
